A SPECIAL ISLAND

A SPECIAL ISLAND is a limited edition of four copies produced at the Hestan Isle Press in November 2017

The pages are not bound together as in a conventional book – but are laid loosely into a box made specifically for the purpose. It encompasses Letterpress and Digital text, photography, papermaking, and other craft disciplines.

The box book is an evocation of A SPECIAL ISLAND Hestan Island in the Solway Firth.

Hestan is the “Rathan Isle” of S.R.Crockett’s “The Raiders”.

Hestan is the “Galloway Island” of Beryl Scott

Hestan is the Øestholme of the Norsemen

Hestan is one of the “Horse Isles” – the home of the Goddess Epona

Hestan is a special Island where Peter and Frances Grant – the makers of this box book –

had their honeymoon, and where they spent their 25th Anniversary,

The poem “EPONA” was written by Frances grant, who also took a few scribbled notes, a drawerful of

photographs, a handful of quotations, and her own fond memories – and put them into this exciting format.

She also made the evocative drawings.

Peter did a scientific survey of the Island in 1959 with two friends John and Geoff, and some of their notes

are quoted in the book. Peter took the photographs, and with Frances’ inspiration about colour and layout,

together they arranged the text and images.
